Tom Kostopoulos Breaks Brad Stuart’s Jaw With High Hit

Kostopoulos received two minutes for roughing.

Post game, Henrik Zetterberg says the Wings will be very surprised if there is no suspension.

No video yet.

added 12:17am on 1/8/11, Mike Babcock says awful hit, disgraceful and unfortunate that (bleeped out) goes on.

added 12:23am, via the CP at TSN,

Detroit defenceman Brad Stuart left the game halfway through the third and did not return. He got bowled over by Tom Kostopoulos right beside the Red Wings net and when the training staff finally helped him to his feet, a giant pool of blood was left behind.

added 12:27am, video added…

Babcock on RWLive:  “That’s an awful hit.  It’s disgraceful, actually.  All you gotta do is hit the guy, you don’t have to hit him in the head….and so to me it’s unfortunate that BLEEEP like that goes on….it’s ridiculous, a player like that can take out a quality player like [Stu]...It’s a blatant blindside hit to the head and he broke a guy’s jaw…”

Pretty composed, Babs.  Makes those 24/7 coaches seem pretty sophomoric.

Not so sure this is all that dirty. No doubt he freight trained him, but there have been many worse hits than this. Most here can’t stomach anything happening to a Red Wing but if you honestly watch the play, you can’t say it was targeting the head.

No, I’m such a cynic about the way this fuched up league hands out punishment that I don’t think Campbell is gonna levy anything against Kostopolous.  Repeat offenders get a break from Campbell.

If Campbell does mete anything out, it’ll probably be something ludicrous like a slap on the wrist fine and ZERO games suspension, which, in hindsight, would probably be par for the Campbell course.

You have to be fvcking kidding. Kostopoulos skates right past Stuart while his left arm is coming up the entire time. If he wanted to hit him, hit him like a man and knock Stuart on his ass - it was right there for the taking. I’d have absolutely zero problem with that, even if it injured Stuart.

You either have to be blind, or just a fvcking idiot to say that he wasn’t targeting the head.

I’m not a Wings fan…AT ALL…but I’ll tell you that he was going for the head.  Why else would you come in at that speed and smear Stuart without even attempting to play the puck?  That is a blindside hit to the head.  There is no way he could have protected himself.  Gutless.  Complete chicken****.  Throw the book at him.

And I don’t care what team you root for - you don’t EVER hope another player gets hit like that.  If you are a fan of the game, you hope this doesn’t ever happen.  No excuses.

Thanks for the instigator rule, Gary. Let the players officiate themselves and this garbage doesn’t happen anymore.  You learn real quick to stop playing dirty when someone kicks you face in.

Man I miss Probie. If we had old #24 patrolling the ice, no way crap like this happens.
And of course, you can’t expect the NHL to protect it’s players from dirty stuff like this.
Colleen Campbell will probably issue a stern warning that Kostopoulos better not do that again “OR ELSE!”.

I will be shocked if there is a suspension or fine. Stuart isn’t a superstar and he wasn’t killed in the play. So why the need for discipline?

The NHL sucks and in 5 years when half of the leagues stars are sitting off from concussions, they’ll have nobody else to blame but themselves and for allowing an uneducated idiot like Campbell running their Operations.

The Wings best stay at home defenseman on the shelf for at least a couple of months - - because of a blatant blindside hit to the head.  The exact thing the League is trying to crack down on.  Kostopoulos will get a couple of games.

Won’t hurt the Flames, even if he gets 10 games - they won’t make the playoffs anyway.

Kills the Wings, next to Lidstrom, Disco Stu is the man on “D”.

Wings are screwed.

As a penguin fan I understand the anger; however, wanting Kostopoulos suspended for 2-10 games does nothing for the wings…. same with Steckel getting suspended.  How does either of these two guys not playing in the next 2-10 games help either the wings or the penguins?

It is getting to the point where it is going to be eye-for-eye.

a long suspension will make it less likely that a player/team will do the same thing again. That’s the logic behind it. It’s not “Help my team” but “Help the game.”

I was SHOCKED that it was only a roughing penalty. Roughing isn’t even the right call here. Elbowing is closer than roughing since there was no punching motion. It’s a blindside hit to the head with intent to injure. I’d like to see the league set a record here with suspension to show they are serious about ending head-hunting. I wouldn’t care WHO the recipient of the dirty hit was, this kind of play needs to be gone for good.

As for the refs only handing out a 2 min roughing call - I think that was probably a tough call to make (if I put myself in their shoes). There was a cluster of people, so they’re all trying to keep any eye on everyone, and it happened so fast. It wasn’t like an open ice hit, where the puck carrier and the player that hit him are the focus of everyone. Although, they probably should’ve assumed the worst when he left the ice bleeding.

Exactly.  In an ideal world (which would mean Colin Campbell weren’t handing out suspensions), a fair and consistent suspension policy prevents players from targeting the head like this and, just like bad reffing is supposed to, it all evens out in the end to benefit ALL teams.

I don’t see how Kostopoulos would get more than three games, but I’m going to be furious if he gets nothing.

Exactly.  You know going in you’re going to get 10 games, not that you can dissemble and hope it gets lost in the speed of the game momentum of the season.

Not surprised that Eager was suspended so fast for punching one of Sid’s old buddies (what was it, 12 hours?), but they’ll wait until the next business day (Calgary doesn’t play until Tuesday) to release a vague statement about this play and enjoy the benefit of it seeming less of a big deal in 2 or 3 days.

...if you honestly watch the play, you can’t say it was targeting the head.

Stop the video at the 1:06 mark and look at the position of Kraptopolis’ elbow. It’s right up against Stu’s chin. That makes it a hit to the head. And the angle from which the hit came makes it a blindside hit. It’s just that simple.

Eager got four games for sucker-punching Armstrong. Let’s see how the league thinks a blindside hit to that head that results in a broken jaw compares to that.

As for the Wings’ injuries, it’s not just the number but the type of injuries that’s strange. A lacerated tendon in the wrist, a broken hand, a broken ankle and now a broken jaw. And only the last one wasn’t a freak accident. Jobu definitely must be pissed off about something.

Wings fans have short memories.

If that hit is dirty, what about this hit from your beloved Kronwall.

“It was a fair hit, a good hit,” Kronwall said. “I’ve made plays like that before. The puck was between (Havlat’s) skates. I didn’t leave my feet. It was a clean hit. I’d do the same thing again.”

“The puck came around the wall,” Babcock explained. “Havlat had it in between his legs. Kronwall didn’t leave his feet. He did it on the follow through. He just finished the check. He hit the guy fair and square.

Leaves his feet. Blindside. Shoulder to the head. What’s the difference?

And if you are going to splice hairs, don’t bother. It is what it is.

Big difference. Kronwall leveled Havlat from the front, not sure how you define blindside. Also, Havlat had the puck between his skates and his stick. Kronwall led with his arm against his side, as most checks are done. The only area he screwed up on is he left his skates, but he not in the sense that he launched himself at Havlat, it was more at impact.

I’m sure you’ll call this splicing hairs, but when you post such a dumb statement as thinking Kronwall’s hit was “blindside”, it begs to be mentioned.

Another thing is, there was not whistle in the Kronwall hit. The penalty was assessed only after Havlat didn’t get up. And it was somewhat controversial at the time since it was clearly only called because Havlat got hurt. Havlat, by the way, has a history of keeping his head down when it should be up and it’s not the first time he got laid out in a similar way.

Stuart had the puck long gone and was not facing his attacker and the elbow went out of its way to connect to his face.

Wings hater. Thanks for your two cents, now go away.

It’s a Catch-22…. for Kost. to get what he deserves, Stuart will have to be near death, which would suck. But if Stuart is mending nicely with a decent timetable for a return, Campbell will see no reason to hand out further punishment.

I’d love to see the Venn Diagram of Punishment that Campbell relies on…. I imagine the circles correspond to the Perpetrator, the Victim and the Extent of Injury, and with some additional circles related to each players’ stature/star-power in the league. It’s a joke.
