Todd McLellan Must Pick The Right Goalie For Game 7

from Rory Boylen of The Hockey News,

If you’re coaching a decisive playoff game where your job hangs in the balance, I’d imagine you’d want to know and have confidence in who your starting goalie is.

Todd McLellan won’t have that luxury.

By starting rookie Alex Stalock in a Game 6 loss to Los Angeles, McLellan opened the door of uncertainty for a rookie without any playoff experience. Granted, Stalock had a .932 save percentage in 24 games this season, but a Cory Schneider/Roberto Luongo situation this was not. You have to keep going with your Stanley Cup winning, Vezina Trophy finalist.

But by turning to Stalock in Game 6, there is no clear choice for Game 7.

If SJ gets outted after a 3 game head start, would SJ management fire McLellan?  And, if they did, would Babcock consider offering him an assistantship again.  And if Babcock did, would McLellan be interested?

As a Wings fan I’d love to see McLellan back, but if fired from San Jose I think he’d get scooped up as a head coach right away as he’s proven himself more than capable coaching at the NHL level.

You’ve got Washington and Florida ... and probably Vancouver and Toronto with open positions. Where else am I forgetting?

Then again I’d rather be an assistant coach in Detroit than a head coach in Florida ...

It doesn’t matter who coaches the Sharks, as they choke no matter who is behind the bench. Like Barry Trotz , McLellan will find another job quickly if fired.

Whatever goalie he picks, I hope it’s the one that chokes the Sharts out of the playoffs.

I can’t see how McLellan won’t be ousted if the Sharts shart their pants again.

After a while, the finger has to be pointed in his direction.
