Thoughts On Moving Malkin

In a paid subsciption, Craig Custance of ESPN discusses the possibility of paying and/or moving Malkin.

I've tried to post the most important part here...

Evgeni Malkin, who was arguably the Penguins' best player in Game 3, is entering the final year of his contract that pays him $8.7 million next season. He can sign an extension in July, and those negotiations will be fascinating because he'll become the biggest star to work out a new deal under the restrictions of the CBA.

Pittsburgh can't drive down the annual salary cap hit with extra years on the end of the contract because of the new rules regarding contract length under the new CBA. The longest Malkin can sign with the Penguins is eight years, and that option drops to seven years if Malkin hits the market in 2014. According to Article 50.6 of the new CBA, the yearly salary of a player can't exceed 20 percent of the upper limit at the time the standard player contract is signed. So that's $14 million under the current salary cap of $70.2 million and $12.86 million when it drops to $64.3 million next year.

Malkin may be the first player to test those limits. He's a franchise center who is still just 26 years old. He also has the threat, if he doesn't get a deal to his liking from the Penguins, of playing in the KHL, a league that doesn't have the same restrictions on salaries for its stars the NHL has. An annual salary in the $15 million range is something Malkin could demand in the KHL.

If he hit the open market next summer, he'd be the best free agent in years. Better than Zach Parise, Brad Richards, Ilya Kovalchuk or Ryan Suter -- all players who landed huge contracts in free agency.

There's no reason to expect he deserves anything less than what Crosby got last year when Crosby signed a 12-year contract extension worth $104.4 million. The problem is, the contract is capped at eight years, which would work out to $13 million per season if the total dollar amount is the same.

are there any teams not in the basement of the league who could afford to give him a contract like that?

Isles ($29m space), Devils ($26m) (wait did the Devils miss or not, I forget now?), Blues ($24m), Ottawa ($22m), and Toronto ($19m) are all playoff teams from this past season who theoretically have the cap room.  Budget room is a different matter entirely.

I still maintain that if PIT thinks they absolutely need to move a huge salary/name out they should also explore Crosby, if for no other reason than Crosby’s injury issues make him a bigger risk to hang onto IMHO.

If you think I’m nuts, Capgeek says Crosby and MA Fleury are both more-popular buyout scenarios and player pages than Malkin in the past week.  So I’m obviously not the only one with that idea…

You mean kinda’ like how seeing “Evilpens” at the bottom of a post always explains while it’s so hostile and yet totally bereft of value or content?

Nothing you have said yet does a single thing to add doubt to or refute what Custance said.  Malkin is going to want a lot, PIT can’t resign him for say 15 years anymore to lower cap hit, and PIT’s cap situation is getting dicey.  He’s Russian, the KHL is a legit option for him as well.  There is a “situation” there possibly in the making.

Come back with something refuting what Custance is suggesting is a possibility (not a definite, just a possible avenue), or just shut up.

I kinda feel like Flower is one of the best goalies in the league during those games in which PIT scores 6 or 7 goals. But hey, that’s just me…

The biggest arguement to not move Crosby is one that involves revenue.  His name alone probably helps to sell more tickets and merch than almost any other player.  I’m sure the Penguins get some of the endorsment dollars when he appears with his jersey on.  I do wonder about his longevity.

Exactly. If it was Malkin instead with the history of concussions then they’d move him without a second thought if they had to choose one or the other (Crosby).

also Darren Dreger started this BS with a tweet about IF the Pens lose in 4 or 5 games People “Feel” Malkin could be moved, I guess if they lost in 6 or 7 those same people would have “felt” that they wouldn’t move him sick

This is what the Sports media does in the pressbox & Bars they sit there & shoot the shit & come up with a common line & just use it till it is dead

Pgh Sports Media Group think line is after the “Inexplicable” loss they are saying that while Coaching is a problem how about the stars not scoring without taking in to account that they coaching NEVER EVER changes anything. Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity “Is doing the same thing over & over & over again & expecting a different results”

They don’t want Bylsma fired because he is a nice guy to deal with & most of these clowns have NO CLUE about hockey & with a supposed tough guy coach he would rip them when they asked a ridiculous ?

Basically, I agree with the notion that Bylsma is probably the single biggest problem in Pittsburgh right now. The salary cap is not a fake issue. Shero plays it close by trading so much. He’s sort of the anti-Holland. I personally like it because it makes the game/team more interesting, but it also increases the likelihood that he screws the team.

It is entirely reasonable to suggest that Letang or Malkin/Crosby need to be moved. They’ve got half their team up for UFA next year - that’s not a good scenario. So when act like the media is a bunch of morons with no clue about hockey because they dare to suggest that moving Malkin is an option, you sound unhinged. The fact is, a lot of these media types know quite a lot about hockey because they follow it closely for their job and have had access to the coaches, GMs, players, etc for years. Perhaps Dreger’s heard solid rumors/speculation and he’s tossing it out there to soften the blow for when it happens or to gauge public backlash. As for the media not wanting Bylsma to be fired because he’s a sweetie pie to them and they’re scared of a mean old Tortorella-type being all mean to them, you sound like a simpleton. I’m sure the media is more than happy to have a controversial coach because it helps write stories and keeps their name/bylines in the public eye more. Also, it ignores the fact that all I’ve read in the past week is stories about how Bylsma’s job is likely gone, and then speculation as to what else should change. Which leads to the Malkin talk, which is entirely reasonable to anyone who takes some time to go to capgeek. They can’t really afford Malkin/Crosby/Letang AND to sign a full roster that doesn’t suck. Malkin is the easiest to move from a PR standpoint. They ain’t getting rid of Letang because he’s more valuable as a solid puck-mover on the blue line. Crosby is Crosby and if Shero trades him, he’s just wiped away everything he’s ever done in his professional life and bet it all on that trade.

But in general, stop behaving as though anyone who doesn’t agree with you must not know jack about hockey. Their arguments are very reasonable and you come off as a bit of a nut when you fly off the handle about how stupid everyone is except for you. Or not, I don’t care, it’s fun to have a few people to stir things up.

1st Off MAF is Gone !! 5 Million right there ! Letang is Not worth 7 Million + a Year which he will get& the Pens Have done nothing but draft D Men \

Pouliot & Maatta last draft, Got Dumoulin in the Trade of Staal, & drafted Harrington in the 1st rd. also still have Despres who was a 1st rd. pick that this coaching staff wouldn’t play but played Marcia Eaton who no NHL team wanted even though every team wanted D Men & also Played Engelland over Despres . They have No C’s anywhere close in the system that are close to being NHL ready & None are in the same universe as Gino. Letang & MAF will be gone Iggy ? Morrow? TK will be gone Craig Adams is gone

Also Darren Dreger is a Laffs fan, If you want guys who have good “Sources” within the Pens that is Pierre(Regis)McGuire who was with the Pens when the won the cup in 91-92 & is great friends with Shero

Pierre Lebrun & Renaud Lavoie both French-Canadian & Rejean Shero has a french Canadian Mother

no. no idea. he lost me a while ago. the slightly-coherent grammar and inconsistent punctuation make me concerned that he had a stroke, possibly sometime in the 3rd period of last night’s game. it used to be that his rants were at least sort of rational and made sense, even if they didn’t make any sense (does that make sense?).

Why do people keep focusing on the goalies?  The penguins scored two goals in the series.
