Thoughts As The Playoffs Start

from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,

- We may see some tinkering with draft lottery odds. On HNIC Radio, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said one potential idea is determining each team's chances by percentage of points in the overall "pool," instead of standings. The fourteen teams that missed the playoffs combined for 635 points. Florida -- which was 30th -- had 36 of them. Will have to follow-up on exactly how that would work, but it's an intriguing idea.

-  Asked one Eastern Conference coach how the Islanders could beat Pittsburgh. His reply: "The Penguins are the most physical team in the Eastern Conference, hard to play against, with good speed. It's incredible how hard everyone plays. If you are not willing to stand up...it is tough on you. Pittsburgh really imposes their will on you in the first five-to-seven minutes in their own building. The Islanders do have good puck-moving defencemen. If those 'D' can get the puck before the forecheck, that's how they can play with them."

-One executive on Detroit's extension of Jimmy Howard: "Great timing to do it right before the playoffs. Sends a message: 'We can win with him. He's our guy.'"

I will start by saying I think Jonathan Toews is a good player. I watch a lot of Hawks games and while he is a dynamo and strong defensively, he brings very little to the table offensively. Patrick Kane and Hossa drive much more of the offense than does Toews. Toews looks like a bull in a china shop with the puck. He can’t really pass or set players up consistently. He turns the puck over much more than he should. And, he seems to hold on and drive the lane with puck too often. Like I said, he is a good player, but he isn’t the second coming like so many seem to make of him on the CBC.

As far as the lottery draft goes, i think its a bunch of garbage with percentages. Screw that noise. Want equal opportunity for all 14 teams who miss? Put 14 balls in a cage, just like Bingo in a way. Spin em around, let them tumble out down the chute. As they come out, thats the order of things. Plain and simple. I dont trust the “mystery envelope” garbage at all. No single team qualified for the lottery should have any sort of advantage whatsoever. Doesnt matter if you just missed the playoffs or missed by 20 points. This will put and end to some teams near the bottom “tanking” on purpose just to get a higher pick.
