Thomas Vanek Will Be A Wanted Man

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

The reason Vanek is a millionaire many times over is because of an uncanny ability to sense opportunity and strike. He’s not flashy, nor does he have great speed or a big shot; rather, he seems to disappear in plain view before re-emerging at just the right moment, a rare skill. His first three goals with Montreal (a hat trick in front of a home crowd that roared his name in adoration as he was named the game’s first star) were perfectly emblematic of what makes him so dangerous. The first two were quick shots from in front when a defenceman seemed to lose track of him. The third was a tipped point shot—again, with him standing right in front of the goal. He’s not often mentioned among the world’s elite goal scorers, but only Alex Ovechkin, Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk have scored more goals than him since the beginning of the 2006–07 season. As one NHL coach puts it: “You don’t spend the whole night worrying about Vanek, but by the time the game is over you might wish you had.”

All 30 NHL teams would happily find room for Vanek’s remarkable consistency in their lineups. He has at least 25 goals in each of his eight non-lockout-shortened seasons and has proven himself durable. Not many players can boast those qualities, and you can bet that fact hasn’t escaped Vanek (or agent Stephen Bartlett). This is a man who understands leverage better than most. He’s had it—and used it—every time he’s needed a new contract. July 1 will be no different.

I would LOVE Vanek on our squad. Who would we trade? I’m not sure…I wish we could have an Anthony Mantha type scorer who’s already NHL Ready. However, What would it take to get him? A franzen? a tartar and a pick? I think I’d rather get Matt Niskaneen via free agency and then make a trade for Vanek.

DET should let other teams beat themselves to death over Vanek, and focus solely on getting a defenseman.

Remember this last offseason they needed defense, and we got Weiss and Alfredsson instead, and the blue line continues to stink it up?  Then the deadline, and instead of even a depth d-man we got David Legwand?

If this offseason comes and we see forward activity again instead and no d-man, Ken Holland probably would be doing more favors if he just retired now instead.

Why does it have to be one or the other?  D should be the priority but it shouldn’t preclude them from trying to upgrade the O as well.

I mean.. I wish I was GM sometimes… LOL (not really, i’d ruin us)  Let’s AQUIRE Vanek, Matt Niskanen, and maybe acquire Weber> (that would be super block buster…, highly doubtful) Let’s DUMP, Franzen, Tartar,  Legwand, bertuzzi, cleary, samuelson, tootoo, emmerton, Anderson, 2nd round pick, 1st round pick and spend a ton of money in combination to get those 3 I mentioned.. What a dream.. Those two defenseman and vanek added and you’ve got a cup contending team when everyone healthy. (Not sure if we’d keep alffy or not)

It’s easy to dump Legwand, Bertuzzi, Cleary, Samuelsson, Tootoo and Emmerton.  Tootoo will be bought out and the rest have expired contracts.

Well… Does anyone know what the estimated cap space the wings have if they DO NOT resign legwand/alfie? In addition to all the dead weight we’re removing?

Plenty to sign both a top 2-3 d-man and a scoring winger although I wouldn’t hold my breath on Holland making any kind of bold move…he won’t “overpay”, ya know.

They’ll actually have around $20 million in cap room before they resign their own RFA’s.

Did you read what I said?  I said if Holland goes after another forward but once again does not get a d-man.

If the right forward was there for the right price ($ in UFA, or assets in trade), then I have no problem with that.  The problem is that Ken Holland actually seems to think the defense is just fine, because his actions indicate as much.
