Thinking About Group 2 Signings

from the Vancouver Province,
The new CBA, however, has different rules and there are a couple of sweet spots where there definitely should be some Group 2 (RFA) offers -- and even some of the GMs are thinking it's a pretty good idea. Take the case of outstanding players coming off their rookie contracts. Most will be offered $1 million US, will opt for arbitration and end up getting $1.2 or $1.3 million. But if another team comes in and offers them a $1.99-million deal, which is to say they keep it under $2 million, the compensation is only a second-round draft pick. Who wouldn't want a player like Michael Cammalleri, Marek Svatos or a John-Michael Liles for that kind of money?
