In order to win back fans and once again set about trying to attract new ones, hockey this season has installed more gimmicks than an FTA negotiating team. The public has responded with about as much passion as an expressway attendant making change. In some cases, the brand new, updated, thrilling innovations have turned off the fans. The most talked about twist is the penalty shootout, designed to eliminate that most abhorred of all sporting results in North America _ a draw. Under new rules, any game still tied after regulation time plus five minutes of sudden-death overtime is decided by the soccer-type shoot-out. Of 694 games prior to last weekend, 71 ended in shootouts.
