Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, Ottawa Senators left wing Dany Heatley and San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Jan. 7.
FIRST STAR—ROBERTO LUONGO, G, VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Luongo backstopped the Canucks to four victories, including two decided by shootout, and posted a 1.92 goals-against average and .940 save percentage. He made 27 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames Jan. 2, stopped 39 of 40 shots and five of six shootout attempts in a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars Jan. 3, recorded 26 saves in a 3-2 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers Jan. 5 and finished the week with 33 saves, plus five of six stops in the shootout, in a 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers Jan. 7. Luongo has posted seven consecutive victories, improving his season record to 24-15-1 with a 2.44 goals-against average, a .914 save percentage and two shutouts. The Canucks lead the Northwest Division with 49 points (24-18-1).
SECOND STAR—DANY HEATLEY, LW, OTTAWA SENATORS
Heatley led all NHL scorers for the week with eight points (five goals, three assists). He began the week with one assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Atlanta Thrashers Jan. 1, tallied his third hat trick of the season added an assist in a 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Jan. 3 and notched two goals and an assist in a 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Jan. 7. Heatley leads the Senators and ranks seventh in NHL scoring with 53 points (25 goals, 28 assists). The Senators, 6-3-1 in their past 10 games, are third in the Northeast Division with 48 points (23-19-2).
THIRD STAR—JOE THORNTON, C, SAN JOSE SHARKS
Thornton recorded seven points, all assists, as the Sharks won both starts last week. He tallied a season-high four assists in a 9-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Jan. 4 and added three more in a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 6. Thornton leads the Sharks and is 10th in NHL scoring with 53 points (11 goals, 42 assists) in 42 games. The Sharks improved to second in the Pacific Division with 56 points (28-14-0).
