The Stars Have Left The Playoffs

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

Hope you had fun in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

Fun just left town.

Unless the Philadelphia Flyers can provide enough fireworks for the entire class, we appear destined for a second round of games in which 2-1 will be the third-period score most nights, highlight packages will be mighty thin and shot-blocking will be more prominent than “He shoots, he scores.”

With mayhem and some wild scores mixed in, the first round seemed intriguing enough. But now many of the big boys have been sent packing, teams like Pittsburgh and Vancouver and Boston and Detroit that brought at least a little flair and some big names to the rink.

Now, other than Philly, we’re left with teams that seem inclined to make every night one long, chip-and-chase tug-of-war. The NHL was able to congratulate itself with good TV ratings in the first round, but how will the audience respond now with Sidney Crosby, the Sedins, Tea Party Tim, Patrick Kane and all of Canada having checked out for the summer?

The mainstream media caters to the lowest common denominator of its content target audience throughout many societies in the world these days.  This article is a fine representation of that theory,

Hockey fans will enjoy the playoffs. Fans that only root for certain countries or cities will not. The real question for these people, are you a hockey fan or just a member of a tribe with cool uniforms? It is pretty clear Cox isn’t a hockey fan.

There’s a lot of truth in what Cox writes… last night’s Feral Dogs-Preds game is the prime example.  There wasn’t ONE beautiful goal out of the seven scored… well, except for Boedker’s two-on-one score… and that was it.  The best thing about that game was seein’ Nashville learn what it’s like to lose after outplaying… dominating… the other team during the 3rd and OT.  But I digress.

Us die-hard fans will watch every game that’s on the tube and we’ll love it.  But there won’t be very many beautiful plays and/or highlight reel goals.  I’ll miss that.

Cox is just upset that he’ll actually have to think a bit to write a story now that all the so called stars are gone.

Cox is stupid and doesn’t phrase this well, but he has a point.

That Canadian teams are out is irrelevant. That the stars are out is a symptom. the real issue is that obstructing, pack the house teams (minus philly and, perhaps, Jersey) are the ones that advanced and the up-tempo teams (Van, Detroit, Ottawa, San Jose) are all out. That’s bad for the sport if the pattern holds through next year’s regular season.

Yeah but that was an awesome goal! He comes in fast, then slow, slow, slow and bing upper corner.

There’s a saying that goes ‘Defense wins championships”

Quit watching Damien, or at least please quit writing this crap.

Cox is a total dickwad.  That said, unless you’re an overly-sensitive fan of one of the teams that are still in it, he’s stating the obvious.  Most of the team that are in it are focused on choking the life out the opposition’s creativity and offense while not worrying too much about creating anything themselves.  This is the direct result of the January-onwards decision to not call penalties.  I’m not suggesting a conspiracy - it just happened for a variety of reasons.  If your team is still in it, that’s awesome for you.  Just expect everyone else to be enthralled watching your boring teams.

Stl: David Backes, Alex Pietrangelo, vs. LA: Mike Richards, Anze Kopitar
Phx: Keith Yandle, Mike Smith, vs. Nashville: Shea Weber, Alex Radulov
Nyr: Marian Gaborik, Henrik Lundqvist, vs. Wsh: OV, Nick Backstrom
Phi: Claude Giroux, Jaromir Jagr, vs. Nj: Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin Brodeur

Two stars from each team. With plenty more unnamed.

Cox sucks.
