The January 1st Landscape Is Changing

The expected bowl affiliation shakeup of 2009 started last week with news of two major changes that will come at the end of the 2010 season. The Big Ten likely will send a team to the Gator Bowl starting in January 2011, and the Pac-10 reportedly will ship its runner-up to play in the Alamo Bowl beginning in December 2010.
More minor changes will follow in the coming months. Three questions and themes off the alterations in college football’s postseason:
What’s happened to New Year’s Day? The BCS no doubt has stripped some stardust from Jan. 1, which college football once owned. And though the Rose Bowl still stands as a ratings giant, the day’s early bowls fight the NHL’s Winter Classic for eyeballs.

Anyone remember all outcry when the NHL announce the Winter Classic a few years ago? Looks like they were right.
