The Hits Keep On Coming

via Bob McKenzie tweets,

I know how much people enjoy talking NHL discipline, but tough on this night to avoid it. Three hits that may warrant a look from Shanahan:

BUF’s Leino elbowing of PHI’s Read; PHI’s Bourdon boarding of BUF’s Gerbe; EDM’s Sutton charging of CAR’s Ponikarovsky.

I thought Ovechkin’s spear of Neil should have been a double minor or maybe a major but I’d be shocked if there’s supp discipline for it.

The Leino elbow can be watched a few posts below this one, the Sutton hit can be seen at TSN (scroll to 1:39 mark) and the Ovechkin incident here.

The Bourdon hit on Gerbe can be watched below…

Note 7:24am, You can now watch the Sutton hit video below, the 2nd one after the Bourdon hit…

The league’s getting worse under Shanahan’s watch, not better.
That’s because Shanahan is no better than Campbell.

Guys are killing each other and he’s handing out piddly 2 game suspensions.
Or in the Bruins case, nothing at all.

Someone is going to become paralyzed or killed on the ice. That’s the ONLY way real change will be made.

Like Lindy Ruff stated, Detroit Lion Suh got 2 games for stomping on the arm of a Packer. That’s 1/8 of the season.
If an NHL player got 10 games for something as medial as an arm stomp, all this horsecrap would disappear from the league.

Instead we have guys spearing, elbowing and running players trying to take heads off.
Watch that Suh stomp and you’ll see it’s a tenth as dangerous as some of the things we saw last night alone.

Leino and Ovie should each get a minimum of 5 games. I don’t care if their victim skated away or didn’t miss a shift. I consider it lucky they weren’t seriously hurt.

Ovie’s a repeat offender. Give him 8 games. Leino? A minimum of 5 games. That elbow was blatant.

Predicition: Ovie gets nothing, Leino will get 1 game.
And the message will be clear - ANYTHING GOES BOYS!

1) Ovechkin’s a repeat offender?  I don’t recall a recent spearing incident involving the Washington forward?  Did he injure anyone last night?  Didn’t even get a minor?

@faux - I believe he is referring to Ovie being suspended for the hit on Brian Campbell in 2010

Well I guess since the ref didn’t call anything it never happened. He did injure someone, the guy he freaking speared with his hockey stick. For anyone to even come close to defending this is just absurd. It’s one thing to hurt someone trying to check them, or in a battle. It’s another thing to purposely jab someone with your hockey stick in the stomach where most players don’t have any pads. You’re crazy if you don’t think Ovechkin knew what he was doing and that’s what makes it worse. But I guess if some person plans to kill someone but misses with his shotgun and nobody see’s him miss then that crazy person should get off right? It’s like Hank1974 is saying, he does that because he know’s he can get away with it, and he did. If you start making these repeat offenders pay a price they will stop. Look at Matt Cooke. How many people did he knock out before the NHL did anything serious about it.
