The Games Mean More Now

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

Ville Leino has not had a good season with the Buffalo Sabres after signing a six-year, $27 million free-agent deal in the summer. He’s not doing himself any favours by saying he didn’t really try a lot earlier this year. “There’s so many games during the regular season that it’s sometimes tough to get excited. You’re obviously playing for a win, but now you’re playing for the big things, especially now that we need to win games. It’s our playoffs now, so everything counts: every shift, every stride, every pass, every shot. It’s exciting. You’re really playing for something, which doesn’t happen in Game 22 or 42 or whatever. But it’s exciting and I’m having a lot of fun out there. It’s a different vibe.” A lot of Sabres fans, I’m sure, would like to show him where to put his vibe.

I’m so glad Detroit traded this guy. If you got those 4 points from game 22 and 42 at the start of the year, then you wouldn’t have to answer questions about fighting for your playoff lives every night at the end of the year. I’m sure there are tons of guys that don’t make as much as he does that would love to play hard in games 22 and 42.

The Sabres are discovering what the Flyers and Wings discovered: there’s a reason this guy was still in Europe.
