The End Of Redden’s NHL Career?

from James Gordon of Senators

Extra, It seems unfathomable that a player as talented and revered as Wade Redden was in this city could be completely washed up at the tender age of 33.

But there you have it: This weekend, the New York Rangers announced they were placing the former Ottawa Senators star on waivers, paving the way for a one-way ticket to the AHL’s Hartford Whale (yes, singular) or Europe, assuming Redden’s agent can swing a deal to get him out of North America.

Who could have predicted it would all end this quickly?

The NHL needs to clean up this “stash-away” policy that the Blackhawks and Rangers are adopting to deal with some horrendous contracts that they initiated in the salary cap era.

Redden and Huet are decent NHL players and they should be playing in the league, no other way around it.  This is a disgrace.

The decline in Redden’s play was not as shocking or sudden as some would say - while he did decline more rapidly than most do, it was there on display for at least a few years while he was still in Ottawa.

Sather virtually guaranteed Redden’s career would end early when he signed him to a long term contract that paid him at least 3 times what he was worth. It was more than he could have hoped to play up to - even allowing for a rebound that never happened - and too long for a buyout to be a tenable option.

Let’s face it some players traded in playing in the NHL for being paid an NHL salary. Huet and Redden maximized the amount of dollars they would get and now they are going to have to really earn that extra cash by playing in the AHL or KHL. I find it highly unlikley that these guys would take league minimum to return to the NHL if they had the option of having their current contracts torn up.
