The Devils’ fight for the Stanley Cup ended last night with a loss to the Kings. Now general manager Lou Lamoriello will turn his attention to some serious offseason issues:
1. RE-SIGN ZACH PARISE. It is not likely to happen before the Devils’ captain becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. Lamoriello will have some big money to spend on Parise, but the Detroit Red Wings are expected to drive up the price. The odds of keeping Parise: 50/50.
2. ILYA KOVALCHUK’S HEALTH. Will a shorter summer of rest be enough to solve his back problems or will some type of surgery be necessary? Kovalchuk doesn’t think so, but the Devils have a major investment here.
3. FREE-AGENT GOALIES. Martin Brodeur (40) and Johan Hedberg (39) are both unrestricted free agents. It’s 99 percent sure Brodeur will be back, but who will be his partner? Prospect Scott Wedgewood isn’t ready. If the GM believes the team can win it all, Hedberg may get one more year.
