The Best Time of the Year

Introducing Michael Smith as the New Jersey Devils blogger at KK.  It should be an interesting season for the Devils and Michael will be bringing you all the Devils news. -Paul

With the Summer of Kovalchuk behind us—we think so at least, though Jim Kelley politely disagrees—New Jersey Devils fans can finally look forward to a new season, with training camp opening tomorrow.

Maybe some other times of the year are more exciting—the Stanley Cup Playoffs, July 1st, the Fisherwood wedding—but there’s really no time quite like September.

Besides bringing perfect hockey jersey weather, fall also offers the promise that comes with a clean slate.

That last part has probably never been as true as it is right now for the Devils.  They have a new coach in John MacLean, someone who’s deserved his shot behind the bench for years and has promised a more-exciting brand of hockey in New Jersey.

They have arguably the most talented player to ever wear the team’s colors signed for the next 15 years.

They still have one of the league’s best goalies until someone can prove otherwise.

They have a dynamic young core with players like Zach Parise, Travis Zajac and David Clarkson, and more of the same on the way with Matt Corrente, Mattias Tedenby, and Jacob Josefson.

They managed, miraculously in my opinion, to improve the blueline after losing Johnny Oduya and Paul Martin with the addition of shutdown defensemen Anton Volchenkov and Henrik Tallinder.

With all of that, some news that slipped through the cracks: they have a new blogger at Kukla’s Korner, as well.

His name—my name—is Michael Smith.

I’ve been a fan of the game since I was about seven or eight years old, when given my first jersey and Mylec Ultra Curve stick.

It was love at first wrist shot.

After graduating from college, I have written for both MaxHockey.com and the New Jersey Devils, while also interning last season for the ECHL in communications.

My plan is to make Kukla’s Korner a source for comprehensive coverage of the Devils, with daily news round-ups, game previews and recaps and feature stories.

I look forward to the opportunity Paul has given me and hope to make the most of it.

Now, after this off-season that’s somehow seemed so long, yet went by so quickly at the same time, let’s drop the puck.
