The Winnipeg Jets Could Use Mike Richards

from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press,

Mike Richards is exactly what the Winnipeg Jets need.

If he hits the market, the Jets will have as strong an opportunity to sign him as any team in the NHL. It’ll be a deal they’ll have to get done.

Richards is a driver, not a follower. He’s a competitor of a different stripe and there are only a handful of players in the NHL with the kind of will he brings to the game.

Put it this way: The Jets have a list of players that opponents look at and say, "we can push him and him and him out of the game." It’s a big factor in the games they lose.

Richards doesn’t get pushed out of games. He does the pushing. He’s smart, he’s a little dirty and he’s been around. He’s no longer a top-six player, but a third-line centre who can draw some growl from a team’s engine.

Stuff like this is so, so stupid.

Who, in a UFA situation, chooses to go to Winnipeg?

Quick, name the big-name UFA’s the old or new Jets have landed.

He’s no longer a top six player… for the LA Kings.  I think he’s a safe bet to be (arguably miscast) a top six guy for the Jets.

Not to mention that there have been no rumblings from the Kings themselves that they’re going to be using either of their compliance buy-outs.  All this talk of Richards being bought out is happening in the media.

I can see the Kings buying him out, but it’s just as likely that he stays there.  He’s exactly the type of player that Lombardi likes and he fits perfectly within the Kings’ system.  It might cause cap issues for a year or two, but the cap constantly goes up, year after year.

He’s paid an awful lot for centring the fourth line, but the fourth line on the Kings isn’t designed the same way as many other teams.  These aren’t plugs just playing 5 minutes a game with the coach praying they don’t get scored on.  These guys have a pretty good amount of skill and they’re used regularly throughout the game including the PP and PK.

If the Kings need to free up money, I suspect that Matt Greene may end up being the odd man out.  I’d hate to see that, but Greene has been a healthy scratch a number of times and is probably only in the lineup right now due to Regehr’s injury.

I’m from Winnipeg and he usually writes stuff like this.  Sometimes, it’s really good and often times, it’s not.  Factoring in his own words that “he’s slowing down” and “has lost a step” is pretty much against everything Chevy is building for.  If LA can keep him somehow, I think they will.  That said, we would love having Richards here and we could definitely afford him for a couple years but it would have to be a very good price and good term.  And the guy’s 29, still in a prime age so I’m not sure where’s this is coming from.

The somewhat local factor is pretty much the only reason this is being thought of right now.
