What happened with Schultz in WAS?

via Capitals Insider…

Washington’s move to buy out Schultz makes sense from both a salary-cap management and roster perspective. In late May, Schultz made it known that he requested a trade from the Capitals because of a lack of playing time over the past two seasons.

Last month, McPhee said that he would attempt to accommodate the defenseman’s request but a trade wasn’t in the offing. With no defined role for Schultz on the Capitals’ depth chart and the Calgary native clearly looking for a fresh start, it makes sense that they would buy him out rather than have a frequent healthy scratch use up $2.75 million of their salary cap space.

“We’ve told our players over the years, if you don’t want to play here we’ll move you,” McPhee said. “It’s that simple. This is a great place to play. Great place to live and work, great fan base. If you don’t want to play here, that’s fine we’ll move you along.”

Then I think I want me some Schultz in Red and White.

Make it happen, Kenny.

Schultz in Red and White

not arguing, just asking:  my memory is fuzzy on this guy (schultz)... is he top 3 defenseman material?  KH indicated he is set on defense unless he can add top 3 talent

Nope.

He’s not an offensive d-man though (Kronwall, Smith, Kindl, etc).  He’s big (6’6”) and skates decently for his size (unlike a dunce like Gill), while he’s not a “bruiser” like Caps fans seemed obsessed with making him, it’s just not his game.

He’s a bigger Colaiacovo who could maybe play on the bottom pairing with a Smith or Kindl, and he’s getting bought out from a what, $2.75m contract which everyone thought was “too rich” so he’ll probably come decently cheap (prolly cheaper than Carlo).

I’d like to see the Wings gamble on him.  He’s basically a defensive d-man with reach who isn’t a liability skating.  They don’t have any of those at the moment.

He’s not an answer to the Wings’ Top 3 d-men quandry but I don’t think a solution to that is forthcoming so… at this point I’d settle for a defense-frst d-man with size to complement the glut of bottom-3 offensive d-men.

Schultz is also only 27 years old, I should add.  For comparison, a guy like Ryan Whitney going to UFA is 30 years old.

Kris Russell is admittedly 26, and is also only 5’10”, 180lbs.

I hear you, but this would only complicate the tasks on KH plate. Which he seems to be having trouble handling. He has a glut of bottom 6 fwds he can’t move and/or sign too. He already has an extra d-man or two that need moving… only to make it worse by adding another…  it would almost be comical.

I agree with you that he would be an upgrade addition to the team provided he plays up to the reputation you described. Gawd, what an awful mess of a roster.

The thing about Schultz, Holland could have had him at the trade deadline for peanuts so is there any interest?

I guess this is what happens when you draft and stick with a bunch of guys and none of them appear like they’re ever going to be a top pairing guy.  And before anyone says anything about Ericsson, just because he’s played there doesn’t mean it’s where he belongs.

You’d think DET could use a big guy that was a +50 just a few years ago though.

Dunno’.  Free beats giving something up other than salary though.  My god, Kenny’s willing to give up a 1st for the trainwreck named Kyle Quincey….

good point. but maybe just not interested at that salary and term. now that he is free, maybe a different story. good thought though
