The Toronto Maple Leafs Could Not Win A Game They Needed

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

This is the game the Maple Leafs will look back at with all kinds of dismay, wondering how it was they let this playoff night and this playoff series with the Boston Bruins slip away.

This is that defeat. The one that shouldn’t have happened. The one that will hurt like hell in June and July and August.

This was the game they let get away, when the Bruins weren’t great but were opportunistic enough to win, when too many Maple Leafs players skated on the periphery and played the part of passenger, when they gave away another freebie goal in the first minute of play and scored only once themselves in 60 minutes.

This was the night when the future of the Leafs — building a team around Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander — didn’t seem to be a very sound approach. In fairness to Marner, who did all the work on the only Toronto score in a 3-1 Game 4 loss, he was again the Leafs’ most dangerous forward.

Below, watch the game highlights and Mike Babcock post-game.

Saw this stat on Twitter last night, Babcock is 14-22 in the playoffs since Lidstrom retired & has only advanced to the 2nd round once since 2013.  Babcock has won as many playoff series as Blashill since 2014.

My, my, Saint Michael Babcock, he who can walk on water, according to some around here, maybe isn’t the greatest coach in the history of the universe??

... well, and, arguably, for the same reason: it’s hard to win in the second season when you have suspect defense.

But they did have a Boston team down their best player ... and the best player on the ice ... and they couldn’t get it done.  I thought this series would go 7, but it won’t get that far.

I am glad Toronto is one game away from locker clean out. That being said, I really want Boston to lose in the next round. Can’t stand seeing Marchand’s face. He’s like Crosby to me. I don’t care how skilled the guy is or what he brings to his team. He’s a complete D-bag that I will never respect.

I honestly can’t believe Toronto won a game.  Their defense is so sub par.  Ron Hainsey got the benefit of the doubt because he won a cup last year but man, he was miserable that entire playoff run.  He was scraping the bottom of the barrel by the finals.

I’m not a Boston guy at all but they should have swept this toronto team plain and simple with all the firepower they have comparatively.

Babcock is a great coach, but Toronto just is just good (and that isn’t enough).  Because of their big media presence I think their players are a little over-rated, just because the media is always talking about them.

In another 2 years, Toronto could be great once their “kids” grow up.

He is when he has great players.  When was the last time he coached a team that exceeded expectations?

The leafs are my Wings backup team. Going into the playoffs I just wasn’t sold on Anderson in net, even when Toronto media were pushing him as a Vezina trophy candidate. He isn’t the only reason they’re down 3-1, he’s got company in that regard.

Hopefully the come back and win the series because I throw up in my mouth a bit each time I see that rat marchand pulling his normal douchebaggery crap.

If the Eastern final is Boston vs. Pittsburgh, I’ll be reading a book.

Haha, the Wings from 2010- 2015!

As others have mentioned, the Leafs defense is not where it should be.

Get ready for Doughty or Karlsson talk.

Man, Toronto would be a different team with Karlsson.  They are right up against the cap though, and have Nylander’s contract to negotiate this offseason.  They would have to move some assets, but Karlsson would take them to the next level.

That’s funny Paul, I was listening to leafs post game radio, and former Leafs assistant GM, Bill Waters was speculating Marner & a 1st rnd pick to get Doughty…..

That’s what makes the Leafs so interesting…they have the assets to possibly turn the thing on its head.

Don’t forget, Leafs will have to sign Matthews too, his ELC ends next season and word is the Leafs would like to sign him earlier than later.

But that depends on what Matthews wants to do.

For sure!  The last couple years Babcock got the Wings into the playoffs was by pure grit.
Also, the year he coached the Ducks to the S.C. finals and eliminated Yzerman and the Wings.

Toronto is (was!) vastly over rated.  As others have stated, they need better players, especially on D.

But aren’t they also the undisputed landing spot for Tavares, too?

Not gonna’ lie, I enjoy watching Babcock struggling with a team that was supposedly a lot more talented and young than the Wings.

It’s really not just that easy, is it?

Toronto’s defense is almost as bad as the Red Wings. angry

Also an important player’s last couple of years…coincidence?

How many years ago with that?
