Improved team speed, better balance on all four lines, and younger legs helped the Flyers dominate the third periods of their first three games, at San Jose, Los Angeles, and Anaheim.
The Flyers, who went 2-1 in the usually treacherous California portion of their season-opening four-game road trip, have outshot their opponents in the third period, 17-11, 17-5, and 15-4, an indication of the huge territorial advantage they have held in those 20-minute segments.
“I think the first three games, we’ve rolled four lines pretty consistently,” said right winger Wayne Simmonds, whose goal 44 seconds into overtime lifted the Flyers to a 3-2 win Saturday against the injury-riddled Ducks. “And with all the guys we have who can skate [quickly], and with the skill we’ve added, I think that helps keep us fresh for the third period and allows us to continue to push and push and push.”
