The Sun And Hockey Don’t Mix

from Sean Keeler of the Denver Post,

Hey, Gary. Come here. See that shiny thing in the sky? The big yellow one? Looks like the front of a Raisin Bran box?

At high noon, on a clear day — deep breath, now — it melts ice at elevation.

I mean, who knew?...

The next time Bettman asks the Avs to play outdoors, they ought to take a nice, long, hard pass. The next time Gary pulls up in the clown car, let some other suckers ride shotgun.

“The cloud cover,” Bettman remarked, eyes skyward, as announcers Mike Tirico and Eddie Olczyk watched uncomfortably, “is everywhere but where the sun is.”

Again: Who knew?

Stay away, Avs.

Stay far away.

I saw that Wings flag below the American on on the water there and thought it was the perfect message to send to Buttman. Look what the league is missing by having a top marketable team at the bottom of the standings.

Outdoor game in picturesque locations are a great idea in theory, but the NHL has to put more effort into the practical side of these games which are above else for the fans (sitting in a 10 mile traffic jam in Colorado or having to watch at midnight on a cable station doesn’t do the league any good).

I mean one of the best parts of these outdoor games was HBO’s 24/7 leading up to it. Are you telling me the NHL doesn’t have the funds to essentially produce a high quality 30 minute infomercial if HBO won’t fund it?

I personally would like to see the original 6 teams play a round robin style tournament to open the season with coverage like 24/7 to determine which two teams play in the outdoor game. I think it would be a way to engage with fans and market the league as open to the fans vs sharing the spotlight for 3 months. At the very least it would put a compelling product and not the usual ease into the season.

I would rather use the Winter Classic as the rotational game divided among the league’s teams and replace the Stadium Series games with an Original 6 Tournament deciding which among them gets an outdoor game. Call it like the NHL mimicking the NFL on Thanksgiving—certain owners might complain but they would be quickly shut up in the spirit of tradition.

Otherwise, you are going to end up playing off Navy Pier or in Lake Michigan or the islands off Harbourfront in Ontario and the only fans watching will be on PPV or the League’s Pass.
