The Spin Continues In Colorado

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Anyone who has read me over the last 18 years covering this organ-i-zation knows I have taken issue with this company philosophy before. If I ran a team and my team was awful, I seriously would have the message to the local media: rip us, rip us as hard as you can. It’ll only make me want to work harder so I don’t have to get ripped by your scrawny, know-nothing ass anymore.

But the Avs feel different. They feel that if you just keep it all nice and positive, that all that pesky negative stuff – like non-playoff showings in four of the last six seasons and what looks more and more like a fifth in seven – won’t be noticed by the people. That the people would rather live in a company-line bubble of denial than, you know, the real world.

Only one problem with that in 2013: it doesn’t work. There is just way too much history with this team’s fan base by now to get fooled by any Altitude spin-based baloney. The team stinks right now, and has very often in four of the last six years. Just say it. Truth begets respect. Spin and denial begets anger eventually from those who wanted to buy in to the propaganda.

The last ten years, actually. But Adrienne’s never been one for all those pesky facts.  Either way, reading that is better than porn.  Actually, it is porn.

Funny, I remember tweets from him suggesting his team was talented during the lockout. Oops.

There we go.

Well Done,  Dater!

It takes Brass B*lls for a sportswriter to criticize the management of the team he covers.  Especially to call them “spin-doctors” (liars).

Could Dater lose his job over this?  Possibly.
Stay Tuned.

By golly, that is real jounalism, and he has earned my respect.

While he may not be a favorite of a lot of folks around these parts, for obvious and understandable reasons, I think Dater is bang on here, and I wish more scribes had the balls to call management on the carpet when they’re trying to fleece their fanbase. Too many of us read MSM journalists who just swallow whatever the organization covers, in most cases gladly so. As an unbiased onlooker, it’s been clear the Avs have been directionless and spiraling out of control for years now. And reading the comments on that blog post show the fanbase is sick and tired of it.

The Avs inherited a dynasty waiting to happen when they got the Nords in ‘95, and since the players from that era have left, its been a total gongshow down there.

I get to watch their AHL affiliate pretty regularly. It won’t be getting any better soon unless they swap prospects.
