The Spin Continues In Colorado

01/31/2013 at 8:07am EST

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Anyone who has read me over the last 18 years covering this organ-i-zation knows I have taken issue with this company philosophy before. If I ran a team and my team was awful, I seriously would have the message to the local media: rip us, rip us as hard as you can. It’ll only make me want to work harder so I don’t have to get ripped by your scrawny, know-nothing ass anymore.

But the Avs feel different. They feel that if you just keep it all nice and positive, that all that pesky negative stuff – like non-playoff showings in four of the last six seasons and what looks more and more like a fifth in seven – won’t be noticed by the people. That the people would rather live in a company-line bubble of denial than, you know, the real world.

Only one problem with that in 2013: it doesn’t work. There is just way too much history with this team’s fan base by now to get fooled by any Altitude spin-based baloney. The team stinks right now, and has very often in four of the last six years. Just say it. Truth begets respect. Spin and denial begets anger eventually from those who wanted to buy in to the propaganda.
