The combination of work, time away from the ice and a heart-to-heart couldn’t solve a tired and depleted Canucks team that managed to sweep a back-to-back on the road after mustering a 2-1 win over the Coyotes Wednesday in front of 12,255 at Gila River Arena.
"We’re letting points slip away," coach Dave Tippett said. "We know exactly what we have to do and the points we have to gain. It hasn’t been very fruitful lately."
This is the second time the Coyotes have lost five in a row, a season-high, but the implications of this latest spiral are grimmer than when the Coyotes had a similar slide in early December.
Not only did the Canucks move ahead of them in the standings by two points with the win, but the Coyotes are now five points shy of the No.3 Ducks in the Pacific Division and four back of the Avalanche and Predators for a wildcard berth.
Overall, Arizona has lost nine of its last 11 amid its fall to fifth in the division.
