The Sharks May Have A Point

from David Pollak of the Mercury News,

An offhand and off-color remark by Sharks captain Joe Thornton has turned into an online firestorm.

Only one media outlet in the locker room actually used what Thornton had to say, but once the Vancouver Province put the full statement on its hockey blog, it was widely distributed through Twitter and appeared on other sites such as Deadspin.

The Sharks took issue with the decision to post what Thornton said.

"I don't think it would be a surprise to anyone in the industry that 'locker room talk' exists," Sharks director of communications Scott Emmert said in a prepared statement. "Professional reporters understand that concept and respect it."

If you missed what Thornton said, you can read it here and it may be offensive to some.

It looks like the Vancouver media crossed an invisible line there. Thornton has been around the media for years, and he knows when to talk as if the outside world will be able to read your comments and when general babble between a few people in the locker-room is just that: babble, not meant for publication.

Look for Thornton to be cool (as in cold) around the media for the time being.

Having said all that,  I really do hate the “have you ever played the game” meme. Only people that play (insert chosen sport here) can comment on that sport? That’s pretty short-sighted,and just dumb.

Can someone who never acted comment on Hollywood movies?

Can someone who has never run for office pose serious questions about politics or politicians?

Joe, you’ve never officiated. As such, never ask a referee a question again, k?

Boo Joe!
Maybe you can star in the Hollywood remake of “Tom, Joe, Dick and Harry?”

I hear ya Joe.  That goal was so sexy it made me wanna touch myself a little.

Can we never just be happy when good things happen?  The kid is 18 and just scored 4 goals, one of them highlight reel worthy, with his parents in the arena, and instead of celebrating, he is being shamed and Joe Thornton is being scolded for probably the most tame thing he said in that locker room all night.

This is why we can’t have nice things.  The kid shines, and everybody wants him be play to the lowest common denominator.

I hate Joe Thornton more than perhaps any other player in the history of the league. He’ll never lead his team to a Cup, he dives, he takes cheap shots and I’ve never heard him give credit to an opponent even after they’ve wiped the floor with him and his team. Having said that, I found his comments on this matter to be pretty hilarious.

Of course there’s a “point” to whether or not the media should have gone with it and printed it.

At the end of the day though Joe is a grown man making comments around people whose job it is to report on everything they see and hear.  He can’t be SURPRISED when they do so.  There was no “code” or “rule” broken here.

Some of you guys really think that Thornton was dissing Hertl?  I read it as the opposite, ie if you score four goals you can do whatever the hell you want.  I think he was sticking up for the kid.
