The Rinks Of Sochi

Tucked within the cozy “coastal cluster” of venues for the Winter Games in the Russian resort town of Sochi, the Bolshoy Ice Dome and Shayba Arena sit less than 1,000 feet from each other. Shayba, which means “puck” in Russian, is more than just a clever name: the puck also served as the inspiration for the arena’s architectural design. With its blue-gray roof meant to evoke movement as colors travel around the side of the cylindrical-shaped building, this arena will welcome 7,000 fans and host five of USA Hockey’s first six contests.
