The Outdoor Game Plan

Darren Dreger of Insider Trading on TSN talked about the plans for outdoor games next season in the NHL.

Contracts are not signed and some details need to be "ironed out", but this is the plan.

Scott Burnside of ESPN has some information on the outdoor games too.

ice in LA? good luck with that slushy mess. Also March 1st in Chicago could be iffy as well. I love the outdoor venue, dont get me wrong. I question when/where though.

Yes, they should be required to play (on skates) no matter how slushy the surface is.  Leave it to the NHL to turn a great idea into a farce in a short period of time.

Six outdoor games?  Really?  One of those games will end up being an unmitigated disaster.  Gambling with the weather, logistics, and everything else involved with the outdoor game six times is asking for trouble.  Thanks for doing your best to ruin what should be a once or at very most twice a year spectacle, Gary Ass.

Goddamn. That’s lame.

No game worth 2 points in the standings should be played outdoors, much less 6.  The less than optimum conditions that they usually have for these circuses (rain, snow, low quality ice, wind, sun glare) makes for piss-poor hockey.  One of these games is going to decide someones playoff fate, and they are going to come up 2 points short because they had to pass thru puddles all night.

But the all mighty dollar rules, and corporate America knows fuch-all about what quality hockey looks like.

Maybe Chet’s Shoes can sponsor an outdoor game or 3.

Way to cheapen it all for the future, league.  Only the NHL could find a way to screw up its one annual gimme’.

I instantly went from a strong supporter of the Winter Classic, to hating outdoor games. Poof Gone!

Like everyone else said, this is a stupid idea.  Completely takes away from the “specialness” of the Winter Classic.

Way to kill the golden goose NHL. One a year is fine. 6 is just stupid and presumptious. Why not a hula classic at the end of the year in Hawaii like the NFL. Who scripts this crapola?

One has to wonder how hard Bettman pushed for another outdoor game in Phoenix…

Actually it could be done in Phoenix.  I got married outdoors in mid-February in downtown Phoenix and the temperature was in the low 40’s that night.

Get over it. The NFL plays games outdoors constantly with freezing rain and snow that create horrible conditions that are suboptimal for both teams. These games constitute 1/16th of their entire season. One game in an 82-game season isn’t a travesty and certainly won’t ruin the season for anyone. If it does, maybe the team that suffers from it should try to have one fewer “off-night” when they lose to Colorado at home.

If they had just added the 2 games in NY trying to take in the Super Bowl crowd also, I could’ve lived with it. But adding 2 more after that (I’ll say the Vancouver is the Heritage Classic) in the US, one in SoCal? We need a facepalm icon.

What a clown car the NHL office is! Let’s put Gary on an ice flow and call it the heritage classic winter special. Tell him it will “grow the game” to seals and whales, which is an emerging TV market.

Maybe they’ll expand the league and outdoor classic to Haiti.

The NHL: Making me laugh everyday. Thank you, NHL. Ever since George Carlin left this world I haven’t had much reason to laugh. You remedy that.

I’d watch it.  With the Winter Classic the NHL actually took a gimmick and made something out of it.

Now its going back to just being a gimmick.
