If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That, in a nutshell, was the message Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher gave the players Friday morning as they met for the first time to talk about the approach to taking on the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the East final Saturday night at the PPG Paints Arena.

Hey, it worked for the Senators in Round 1 when they sent the Boston Bruins packing in six games and it was the right tonic to send the New York Rangers into an early summer with a 4-2 series win in Round 2, so why would Boucher change a thing?

Yes, there are areas that have to improve, but in the big picture it has looked pretty good.

“Stay humble, keep doing what we’re doing, it’s working, but at the same time we know how good the team over there is and we’re not taking them lightly,” said centre Zack Smith not long before the club made its way here.“We’re not overconfident. We beat two really good teams but Pittsburgh is going to be the best team we meet yet.

“Basically, (the message) was keep doing what you’re doing. I’m not saying it would be easy (for this to happen), but you win two rounds and you might get a little big-headed. We have a pretty mature group in here and that will keep that from creeping in.”
