Nico Hischier was selected No. 1 by the New Jersey Devils in the 2017 NHL Draft presented by adidas at United Center on Friday.
Hischier, who completed his first season in North America with Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, is the highest drafted Switzerland-born player in NHL history. The previous high was No. 5 (Nino Niederreiter, New York Islanders, 2010).
Hischier (6-foot-1, 178 pounds), a left-shot center, and Brandon right-shot center Nolan Patrick (6-2, 198) were considered to be the top two players available in this year's draft.
