The New Arena Plans In Calgary

08/18/2015 at 3:16pm EDT

from the Calgary Sun,

Along with an NHL arena and a covered football stadium that will double as a public fieldhouse, the proposed CalgaryNEXT complex will include a FIFA-sized soccer field and 400 metre indoor track.

Calgary Flames president and CEO Ken King unveiled tentative plans to season ticket holders Tuesday afternoon, with the project slated to go in the west end of downtown where the Greyhound bus station and a pair of car dealerships now sit....

Renderings shown during the presentation have the complex bring built just west of the 14 St. Bridge on the south side of the Bow River.

King said during the presentation that bars and restaurants would be part of the development, however it would not become another Red Mile, the stretch of 17 Ave. S.W. made famous during the team’s 2004 playoff run.

The Flames organization will put up $200 million toward the $890 million project and will ask the city to contribute $200 million toward the fieldhouse portion, with another $240 million coming from a community revitalization tax and $250 million from a ticket tax.

CalgaryNEXT was officially introduced to Calgarians today through a series of information sessions and a media conference conducted by the Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), while also launched worldwide via www.CalgaryNEXT.com.

For more than a decade CSEC has had a vision for Calgary—a place where all Calgarians can unite in active living, sports and entertainment—a centre for the community and destination for world class events.

CalgaryNEXT includes a Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium with state-of-the-art sports and world-class athletic training facilities. It will be the anchor for a thriving field sport community and combined with the arena event centre, will be the catalyst for new economic growth on the western edge of Calgary’s urban core. The Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium will have a seating capacity of 30,000 for football games and other events.

CalgaryNEXT also includes an innovatively designed arena event centre - a place that will host both professional and amateur ice and sporting events. It will also increase capacity for concerts and conferences. The event centre will be a community gathering place for sports and events, as well as unique public spaces and a variety of food and beverage options.

The arena event centre will have seating in the range of 19,000 – 20,000 fans for hockey and lacrosse games, cultural events, and community service.

CalgaryNEXT will be designed to host world class national and international events that wouldn’t otherwise be in Calgary: Premier events, including soccer, track & field, cultural festivals and concerts; bringing significant economic benefits to the city.

CalgaryNEXT's location near the Bow River will also be a catalyst that will draw residential and commercial development that will see a vibrant new community with shops, cafes and retail space. It will be the globally recognized centrepiece of a revitalized West Village. It will enable the completion of our urban core and transform how Calgarians live, work and play.
