The Latest Trade Talk

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Two league executives told this newspaper Sunday the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks have all joined the Senators on the list of teams looking to unload.

The Rangers have been very public about their desire to sell off assets and there are several contenders trying to get forward Rick Nash.

The Sabres are looking to move winger Evander Kane while the Canucks are offering up blueliner Ben Hutton. The Wings have defencemen Mike Greene on the market and teams have called about Danny DeKeyser while Montreal GM Marc Bergevin has been aggressive in his pursuit of a Max Pacioretty trade.

The Oilers have rentals Patrick Maroon and Mark Letestu on their roster.

more, mostly Ottawa talk...

If teams are really calling about DDK, please give him to them. Holy crap, was this guy over-hyped.

But first, we must obtain all available video of DDK getting jobbed by Anders Lee in front of the net at the end of the NYI game.  Video.must.be.destroyed.

We could call the New England Patriots to see if they have any advice.

By making an even worse mistake.

He is the not the first nor the last 1-2 year wonder.

There’ve been a lot of articles in the past about teams calling KH about certain players and the trades never happen, so I am curious what KH is asking in return (for example for Dekeyser).

Hopefully he’s the last to get a big, idiotic Red Wings contract from Ken Holland though.

Well, DeKeyser’s real good and he tries real hard and he’s got term left on his contract, so I’m guessing Holland wants nothing less than three firsts and a prospect. Like, a good prospect, not someone like Danny DeKeyser was a few years ago.

Were there many fans voicing displeasure with DK contract when he was signed? I remember most were OK with that.

He moved up to first pair minutes and got exposed as a second pair defenseman?  And perhaps then his confidence went to shit?

I remember plenty of folks hoping against hope for a bridge instead of the automatic 5/$30M.

I don’t know, but I also don’t see what that has to do with anything.

Whether people liked the signing at the time is irrelevant. Today it is a terrible contract, because (as per usual) Ken Holland overpaid on potential. Like he did several times with Smith and Ericsson and Mrazek.

“Hey, he’s a pretty good second-pairing guy, so if we pay him like a top-pairing guy he’ll probably become a top pairing guy.”

I remember more like “$5 mil is probably too much, but he is our best dman by default and this cap hit is reasonable for a first pair young dman on NHL team”.

DDK is another wings player who should be sending millions to Mike Babcock in a xmas card.

To be fair, I keep a close eye on CL, Facebook marketplace, Ebay, etc and contact a lot of people about various items to figure out what they’re real price is.  I only buy about 5% of the time.

Sure, and it would’ve been if he turned out to be a first pair dman. This is the peril of continually signing players based on potential, especially when the recent track record of players with these types of contracts actually fulfilling their potential is spotty at best.

But hey, we should all be happy that it only took half the length of Ericsson’s contract for him to actually play up to the level he’s getting paid for, so it’s all good, right? And hey, maybe if Mrazek is given another raise he’ll magically acquire some consistency.

Sure, why not ask? I’m sure that Green and DDK aren’t the only guys that Holland has been asked about.

I don’t doubt DDK could help out a better team and make them even better.  But his mediocrity isn’t helped by being on this team.  I don’t know if he’s regressed or if it’s just everyone around him, but he’s not the same caliber as he was his first two seasons with the club.

I have a feeling he could go somewhere are jumpstart his career again.

I see overwhelming support for the deal with some being neutral and very few against it.

A team shouldn’t have to give much to get DDK. It would be a huge boom just for the Wings to get rid of the contract. But knowing Holland, he’d ask for assets he’ll never get.

BTW, if Nashville is truly interested in Green. A Green for Fabbro trade would make a lot of sense for both sides.

I’m not sure why Nashville would want Green. They already have four pretty good offensive Dmen. It seems more likely if they were looking for back end help they would be wanting a stay at home guy with leadership qualities. Nashville has only $3.2 million in cap space. Detroit would have to eat 1/2 of greens salary.

I could see Nashville interested in someone to play right wing for them. They seem to be short on true right wingers. Frk plus XO for Fabbro…..maybe? I doubt it.

No contender wants XO, he can’t crack our lineup as a #7, I’m sure better insurance Dman are out there.

Frk’s not enough, Tatar or Nyquist with wings picking up 1/2 of the contract this year, and Wit as a toss in, for Fabbro would be a win.

I would certainly think their top priority would be another wing but what was mentioned elsewhere is that Nashville might be looking for insurance in case one of their top 4 dmen were to get hurt between now and June. Green would be good fit for that role.

Poile sees a window wide open for Nashville right now. He remember’s how much the team was impacted by injuries during last year’s playoff run. They are deeper than before but could always use more. If they can get Green at the right price and keep him from going to another contender, they just might do it. A package of Green & Tatar or Green & Nyquist without giving up roster players would be a huge boost to their chances. The salary cap for this season isn’t much of an issue as everything is prorated.

Obviously the team started making mistakes in pen.

Nashville has only $3.2 million in cap space. Detroit would have to eat 1/2 of greens salary.

But Nashville would only need to account for the fraction of Green’s season that they actually have him.  You can think of it as Green’s pro-rated cap number being $1.7M or Nashville’s pro-rated space as being $11.4M (both as of today, via Capfriendly)
