The Latest On Iginla

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,

Here’s the latest on the Jarome Iginla trade front:

-Calgary GM Jay Feaster is asking for goaltender Malcolm Subban to be part of any package from Boston. Boston GM Peter Chiarelli flatly refuses to include Subban in any package.

-Feaster, who is looking for two prospects and a draft pick for Iginla, has also approached Los Angeles about goalie Jonathan Bernier. It is believed that Bernier and a first-round pick would be enough to make Iginla a King.

-A Pittsburgh source suspects that GM Ray Shero may not be willing to part with the prospects required to land Iginla, but will stay in the auction to drive price up for Boston.

-Chicago was contacted by Feaster, not the other way around — and the Blackhawks are now discussing internally the cost of a rental player, and whether Iginla would be able to play the left wing behind right wingers Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane. Chicago has not made an offer to Calgary yet, nor received a trade proposal from Feaster. But if 20-year-old Brandon Saad is in the equation, “That trade is not happening,” said a Blackhawks source.

“the black Gordie Howe”

Kind of an awkward remark there.

The fact that 29 other GMs aren’t loudly and publicly laughing in Feaster’s face shows you how few good GMs there really are in this league.  Is he a good complimentary piece to a Cup contender?  Probably.  Is he the lynchpin thats worth trading away future franchise level talent for?  Not a chance.

Wouldn’t be surprised if trade day comes and goes with very little activity. Especially considering the prices.

My money is on the Kings, but I’m not sure if any of these teams should make these deals unless he is signed to a new contract as a condition of the trade.  As a rental, this just isn’t worth it.

This is a perfect example of why it’s so hard to make trades for high-end players.  If the price for Iginla is this high (and he’s a rental) can you imagine the asking price for a top 6 forward or top 4 D-man?  Unless your team is in full rebuild mode, the asking prices are too high IMO.

Amen to that. Trading away “the farm” (so to speak) for a guy who everyone knows will be back in Cal-Gary next fall is ludicrous. Thank the gods, Iginla took the Wings out of consideration because I think Tick Tock the Broken Clock just might hand over Nyquist, Tatar and a second for Jerome “I’m Going Home Next Fall” Iginla.

The Wings current drop in “desirability” among players may have just worked out in their favor this time. Although, if no one bites on Feaster’s ludicrous demands, he may just sit down with his guy and talk about “taking one” for the team by adding Detroit to his list.

Jay Feaster, meet Scott Howson, he’s got a new book out called “Fired: The story of how I asked way too much for Rick Nash, got hosed when everyone turned me down, and was ultimately canned.”
