Dion was a man among boys with the Red Deer Rebels, WHL. He still put time aside for the kids after every game. When he arrived in the NHL his head was pretty big, too big.  He seemed to come full circle, maybe with his marriage, and now seems like he was when he entered the WHL. Now 34 , he has had a good career. Into the sunset at 34, seems about right.  I was only a fan at the WHL level.

Wasn’t Brian Burke fired not that long after signing that contract with Dion?

It makes sense that Burke would be gone the way everything unfolded. None of the Sutters liked him. Having Brent Sutter on his case in Red Deer and then again as the new Coach of the Flames with a big salary, you knew Dion was going to depart quickly.  As for Burke ,never paid much attention to him.

I sure can’t see Dion being signed as a free agent but there always seems to a GM that will take a chance.

Too bad, at first Dion was a big farm kid with a big shot.

Burke was fired in January 2013. Phaneuf signed his extension eleven months later, in December 2013. Burke was already in Calgary by the time Phaneuf re-signed.
