The Florida Panthers Have Lost Their Way

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

History is repeating itself for the Florida Panthers.

And we’re not going back to the 90s, either.

Just 2021.

For the second straight playoff, the Panthers find themselves down 2-0 to the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning after playing two games at home.

The reasons why they are down in the series differ.

At least a little bit.

In 2021, the Panthers let a 4-3 lead slip away in the third period of Game 1. That lead to the benching of Sergei Bobrovsky in Game 2 where Chris Driedger allowed three goals on 29 shots in a 3-1 loss.

This time around, it appears the Panthers are having an identity crisis.

Florida is done. I just don’t see the Panthers winning 4 of the next 5 against Tampa with 3 of those 5 games in Tampa.

Florida looks terribly out of sync and have for most of the postseason. Too much finesse and not enough fundamentals. While they played a significantly better game last night, Tampa has made it very difficult for them to get pucks on net and done a fantastic job of collapsing around their goalie. Florida’s horrific defense in the final seconds is typical of what a less experienced team will do come crunch time. Speaking of experience, it’s Tampa’s biggest asset. When they’ve looked a little off, they experience has allowed them to adjust and be patient.

Brunette’s inexperience might be part of the downfall. He just doesn’t seem to have the ability to adjust on the fly as some other coaches do. He might be able to blend his lines, but the philosophy looks the same. It’s the primary reason the powerplay has been ineffectual.

Tampa Bay’s road to a three-peat still has plenty of challenges ahead. Every coach will have more experience than Brunette and many have the speed and pressure that could cause Tampa more problems. But right now I wouldn’t bet against Tampa. Experience means so much in these playoffs.

Imo TERRIBLE coaching move to bench Bob for game 2.  This series was gonna be the best goalie duel possibly of the playoffs.  He should’ve doubled down because dreiger isn’t taking them to the next round against vassy.  Florida is good at exploiting tendencies in thr Ozone.  Tampa just has such a high compete level and make it genuinely uncomfortable to play against.  0 free lunches. There’s nothing their long enough to do anything with.  Their best bet at this point is to just launch rubber at the net and hope for the best.  Top 6 reapply needs to play more physical too and try to match Tampa.

I must have grapes for eyes. I thought I was seeing Bob in the net for all of game 2
