The Evolution Of A Suspension

02/22/2013 at 2:03pm EST

via NHL.com,

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety on Friday unveiled "Evolution of a Suspension," the first in a series of educational videos designed to help players and fans better understand how specific infractions are viewed and evaluated, what is legal and what merits the assessment of Supplemental Discipline.

"Evolution of a Suspension" takes viewers through the entire, detailed process that the Department of Player Safety follows each and every time an incident occurs during an NHL game that could possibly require imposition of Supplemental Discipline. That process begins with the clipping of video of the incident by the Department of Player Safety coordinator -- "game-watcher" -- assigned to monitor that game; moves into the evaluation/classification phase that can lead to a hearing and then concludes, if necessary, with creation of an explanatory video.

During the next week or so, the NHL's Department of Player Safety will release educational videos focusing, respectively, upon Goaltender Interference, Kneeing and Tripping/Slew-Footing. During the course of the season, the department will produce videos focusing upon other types of infractions.
