The Edmonton ‘Plan’

from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal,

This just in from the Oilers, news that the team has hired: “TheOilers have hired Glen Gulutzan, Trent Yawney and Manny Viveiros as assistant coaches.”

My take

If I’m not mistaken, we now know what The Plan is for the Edmonton Oilers: axe all the asst. coaches, keep the same coach, GM and almost all the same players and see how that turns out.

In other words, The Plan is to bet the mediocre Edmonton Oilers of 2017-18 were a fluke, while the strong Oilers of 2016-17 were the real deal and the team can bounce back to that higher level.

It looks like we’ve got a full slate of new assistants in Glen Gulutzan, Trent Yawney and Emanuel Viveiros, and that’s a fine and encouraging development, given how horrendous the Oil’s special teams were last year and the strong pedigree of the incoming coaches.

Manny Viveiros sighting!

I don’t think coaching is the problem in EDM.  Not that any of those 3 hires are bad.

I get the distinct impression though that EDM’s roster is a colleciton of parts that don’t really fit together, which is why the occasionally hit on all cylinders under the right conditions, but much of the time struggle.

McDavid showed how far above the rest of his teammates he was this year, but you have to wonder if that’s to the benefit or the detriment of that cobbled together lineup in Edmonton.  He’s going to put up his numbers on any team anywhere in the league, but that team might need something else to push it forward.  It seemed to me like they thought they were closer than they actually were when they got McDavid and made a series of poor moves to expedite the voyage.  They took a gigantic leap backwards this season and need some real crafty moves to fix that cap/lineup.
