The Edmonton Oilers Should Try To Sign Jeff Petry

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,

Jeff Petry is 27-years-old, in the prime of his career as an NHL defenceman. He’s likely got five or six years left where he will play at peak or near peak performance.

Petry has also been the most steady defenceman on the Edmonton Oilers for years now. He’s constantly sent out to play against the toughest competition in the NHL’s toughest conference, but more than any other Oilers d-man, he’s held his own. In fact, most d-men on the Oilers have wilted when asked to face the monster attackers of the West game in, game out, forwards such as Ryan Getzlaf, Anze Kopitar, David Backes and Jonathan Toews. But Petry has done OK. He’s not the kind of true No. 1 d-man the Oilers need, but he’s shown he can generally hold his own against the best of the best.

He’s not a great passer, but he passes OK. He’s not the toughest NHLer, but he generally takes the man. He’s not a big point producer, but he’s asked to carry the puck a ton and he moves it fine.

Sounds like the kind of guy the Wings need to try to get. No more striking out on everyone. I’m starting to feel better about the idea of packaging up any defensive prospect but sproul with Helm and Kindl to get something in return on defence. They need to do SOMETHING. And based on Holland’s recent moves, he’s just going to hang onto players until they run out of waiver options then lose them for nothing.
Like Nestrasil.
They need to do SOMETHING to get some value for these guys and help the team.

At the very least trade for late round picks.

I could see Holland giving up Kindl and Ferraro for Petry.  Maybe throw in a middle 2016 draft choice too.  Just gotta convince MacT that its a good deal.

Petry would look great paired with Danny DeKeyser.

C’mon Kenny ... do the right thing .. bring the kid home so his dad can watch him play.

What a family story that would make ... dad a World Series winner and son a Stanley Cup winner.

Who are you bouncing from the lineup to make room for Petry? I sure hope it isn’t Ouelett.
