The Columbus Blue Jackets Have Won Six In A Row

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

The Blue Jackets are off today after sweeping their second straight back-to-back. They weren't perfect, and it wasn't often pretty, but the Jackets survived Buffalo with a 4-3 shootout win in First Niagara Center on Saturday.

That's six straight wins for the Blue Jackets, matching a franchise record. They last won six in a row from March 24 to April 3, 2006, when Doug MacLean was general manager, Gerard Gallant was coach, goaltenders Marc Denis and Pascal Leclaire were alternating starts and the Nationwide Arena cannon was just a faint idea.

None of the current Blue Jackets were on that club, of course, so none of them had idea that six straight wins was a record.

Honestly, most of them responded like this: "Really? Six? That's it?"

“I was kind of surprised the (franchise record) was only six games,” center Ryan Johansen said.

They’ve been very good since a couple of weeks before Bob came back. With the net taken care of, they were bound to get some wins.

Here’s a short list of “pleasant surprises”:

* Ryan Johnason has turned into a beast, finally cashing in on his promise as a top-10 pick
* Brandon Dubinsky is having a career-year and shaking off the last of his NYR-sloppiness
* Nikita Nikitin has blossomed (after being pushed out by StLouis’ deep-D) into a fine defenseman. He’s solid in his zone and he’s even contributed offense despite never seeing a power-play.
* David Savard, same story as Nikitin except he’s even younger. The Savard-Nikitin pairing has to be the surprise of the season.
* James Wisniewski is also having a career-year after bouncing around the league as a stop-gap 7th defenseman for most of a decade.
* Jack Johnson, another top-10 pick from another team, has spent the last 45 days or so being another solid player. This isn’t enough time to say he’s fulfilled potential - but as someone considered a washout before it’s very welcome 45 days. If he keeps it up, the Blue Jacket will have 3 solid D-pairs. It’s hard to think of a team with 3 solid D-pairs that can’t make the playoffs year-in and year-out.

I’m hoping that in coming years Columbus becomes a top-level team so I can stop rooting for them and start hating them - the way God intended for all Michigan sports fans to hate all Ohio sports teams!
