Well there’s an obvious worst-case for the draft lottery tommorrow!

At least Babcock got them into the playoffs. Winder who the new meanie weenie fall guy will be pinned on?

So teams essentially playoff bound Mar 1 likethe Pengwhines Maple Laughs Edmonton and Nashville could all be gifted the 1st overall pick.

The NHL might be a lost cause if he goes to Pittsburgh, the conspiracy theories alone will ruin the sport until Betman and Crosby retire. Toronto and Edmonton getting another 1sr? Hmm thanks hosting wink wink???

Just stupidity, none of these teams should be in the running.

It is an absolute farce that the Pens, oilers and Pens (even the Jets and Nashville), are all up for the firs pick.  Those first 3 teams for sure, and probably the other two were all arguably contenders for the cup, not just playoff teams.  The fact any of them might get the first pick, and really, 5/8 odds one of them does, is just a literal joke.  I can’t even explain how angry it makes me and not just as a wings fan.

We can joke about the leafs, but they are a few small moves from being just absolutely devastating.  The results after a long layoff in this weird year, are taken with a huge grain of salt in my opinion.  That top level talent Toronto has is just crazy… and so many assets in which to make the tweaks they need possible.  Not having Muzzin the last two games hurt as well.  Columbus is no slouch and they work hard and the young leafs are still learning.  It’s like Chicago and Pitts the early years until it clicked for their star players and this Toronto team has more firepower than either of those teams did.  I can’t even imagine what adding Laferniere (or who knows, one of the other guys) might do to this team….

I’ve been thinking this.  If they had a true stand-out goalie, that would help immensely.  Maybe another top pair dman.

The issue they will continue to have is affording this roster given the amount their forwards are making.  They might need to shake it up and trade one of their top forwards for a Dman, but still…it’s going to be pricey.  Also, signing a good goalie is not going to be cheap either.

But, if they keep selling the fans on just focusing on their forwards, they can keep this ritual up of getting kinda close but winning nothing.  The team will not go deep given how the roster is configured though.

Just the thought of the LAFFS with a shot at LaFreniere…

The dumbest part of all of this is, why didn’t they wait and have the whole lottery tomorrow? Gary wanted a ratings bonanza (I guess) twice, since he saw how the NFL did on their draft. But it has already backfired. Now it’s a drawing to see which playoff team picks ahead of DET, BUF, OTT, ANA, etc, and put in stark relief just how bass ackwards this was. If they had done the whole thing in one go, it would have at least camouflaged the numb-skullery of playoff teams having a shot at Laf. But now, as has been pointed out, teams that are already at least borderline Cup contenders will pick #1 over historically bad teams, and they’re doing a whole lottery show to celebrate it.

Bad system, bad optics, bad idea.

I don’t know if they need a goalie, wouldn’t say Anderson was at all at fault in this series… hes pretty good. Is he a standout or top goalie, probably not, but he’s definitely good enough I’d argue for that team.

The two areas I think are in need of improvement, is one you identified, their D…. but the other, is maybe a bit more grit, but that can be a change in personnel OR more likely, their stars digging in.  I think they’ve taken steps in this direction, as much as I hate to admit it.  I mean they went to a super line the last few games, but otherwise a top 6 of Mathews Marner and Hyman with Tavares and Nylander and Mykhyav (sp?) is pretty good and you have Hyman and Mykhayev as the grit…. maybe some more offense from the next two lines cause invariable, your stars get shut down in the playoffs quite a bit in general.
I mean even last night, I didn’t see the last period, but the leafs were like inches away from tying quite a few times when it was 1-0 columbus.

As for affordability, I think they were fine until now the threat of a flat cap for a while… but as I mentioned, they have SO many assets that would be desired they could easily offload.. Kapanen, Johnson,  hell even Kerfoot…. and if they keep drafting well, and being a contender can get vets like Spezza for cheap….

It remains to be seen if a team can win like that, but Colorado, Carolina, Toronto, etc are all going that direction and they are halla fun to watch.
