The Calgary Flames Will Not Pursue New Arena

from David Blackwell of the Calgary Herald,

The Calgary Flames are no longer going to pursue a new arena in Calgary, Flames President and CEO Ken King said during a news conference with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in Calgary on Tuesday.

After months of talks with Calgary officials, King said it became clear the city has no genuine interest in helping build a new arena for the NHL team.

Good for you, Calgary. Now, stand strong and don’t fold on this one.

What market can the Flames organization move to that will be stronger than Calgary (weak Canadian dollar included)? Phoenix, NYI and maybe even FLA are in line to move sooner. Let’s not even mention that Calgary sells more seats per game than Ottawa does…

Some history: our current mayor is not against public funding. What he is against is a straight handout. If the new arena has clear and obvious public benefits then money is available. To make matters more interesting we have an election coming up and it is basically electioneering by the Flames to push people to vote for a candidate that will blindly approve public funding. I would like to think the voting public is not stupid enough to fall for that.

This stance has come off very poorly with a lot of vocal fans. From a team marketing perspective the timing is terrible, especially after all the good work Treliving has done to position this team to compete.  But moving? They made that threat last spring and it was received extremely badly. Even if they want to I don’t think they would be able to get away with it.
