The Boston Bruins Need To Make More Changes

via CSNNE,

Michael Felger joined Arbella Early Edition to discuss the B's offseason.

He believes one of Peter Chiarelli's flaws is "overvaluing his own players."

"I think they need to evolve a little bit," said Felger. "You need to make changes, you need to evolve as a team. You continually need to try and get better, and make changes and mix and match and do those other things.

"I don't think these guys, meaning Chiarelli and Julien, do it as much as they need to."

I would say Holland does the same thing for the Wings. I think they need to let some of the ‘good soldiers’ go and keep bringing in youth with more skill. I don’t understand the love with abdelkader. He’s got moderate skating and absolutely NO hands. He simply does not score yet he’s frequently on the top line. For a team that needs roster spots and salary to improve, Abdelkader should not be taking up a spot.

Actually, in the playoffs, Abby was their best forward in my opinion and him playing on the top line is more a reflection of guys like Sammy and Bert not panning out than him being the best possible fit. You need a big guy who can crash and bang and go into the dirty areas (and score) - Abby does most of those things well, but he lacks finish. Hopefully Sheahan and Jurco can take another step forward - they’ve got decent size and better hands than Abby.

I’m hoping that Jurco gets up to speed quickly. He’s got the eye-hand coordination to make a monster if he gets any time on the ice with Dats and Z. The biggest problem with Abby is his complete lack of HANDS. Taking a pass from a pressured Dats in front of an open net and not even being able to get a shot off because he can’t control the puck just does not work on the first line. The problem is, he’s a first to second line size guy with second line skating and third to fourth line offensive upside. More likely fourth line offense, really.

He’s had 20 goals in his last 120 games, on pace for right at 15/80game season. But that’s playing a lot on the first line. Not getting it done. I guess the positive is that he’s only taking up $1.8M. But he’s scoring like a 4th liner. He tries hard. He skates hard. He just has worse hands than Helm and doesn’t have his speed.

Agree with both of your sentiments regarding Abby.

Love to root for the guy because he gives it his all but he’s always been a fourth line guy getting top two lines billing given our inability to field a roster with three legitimate scoring lines in the post-Bowman era.

I guess the positive is that he’s only taking up $1.8M.

I don’t even think that’s a positive.  Because of his lack of hands (I’m pretty sure he has special gloves that fit over his wrist stumps, so he’s actually very inspiring) he’ll never be anything more than an improperly used fourth liner, and a generic fourth liner shouldn’t be paid that kind of money.
