from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,
In 2008, the Blues brought Doug Armstrong into the organization as the director of pro personnel, but immediately announced that he would replace Larry Pleau as general manager after the 2009-10 season.
Armstong was the GM-in-waiting, if you will.
"It's been excellent," Armstrong said during that two-year time. "I've been able to get out and see a lot of NHL games ... I've been doing a lot of scouting, trying to make the staff comfortable with me. To me, it's been great."
While Armstrong suggested on Tuesday that assistant coach Kirk Muller could be a possible candidate for such a situation, that apparently is not going to happen. Muller has informed the Blues that he is looking elsewhere after the Blues offered him and rest of the staff one-year contracts after Ken Hitchcock announced that he would return for one more year, but no more.
Muller's departure means the Blues will be without their top two assistant coaches next season. Brad Shaw, who oversaw the defensemen and the penalty kill, had earlier decided to move on, and now Muller, who ran the forwards and the power play is gone too.
