The Best All-Time NHL Captains

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,

Here's a look at 10 of the NHL's all-time best in providing the leadership that got the most out of their teammates:

10. Shane Doan

Few captains in any sport have faced the challenges that Doan has during the past three years. Not only is he relied upon to provide offense and on-ice leadership, but he's also the captain of a team that has been without an owner for three years -- the NHL bought the Phoenix Coyotes out of bankruptcy in 2009 and has operated it since then....

9. Ray Bourque

There was one thing you could be sure of during the 15 seasons Bourque wore the "C" for the Boston Bruins -- they would be in the playoffs. Not only did Bourque win the Norris Trophy five times and appear in every NHL All-Star Game played during his career, he also led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Playoffs every full season he was in Boston, part of a streak that saw the B's make the playoffs for 29 consecutive seasons....

I am probably the biggest Sidney Crosby fan you’ll ever find, but how the hell is he higher on the list than Ray Bourque and Joe Sakic?!  Come on…

Mark messier should not be #1. Sick and tired of new york writers fawning over his game 7 prediction. He got lucky. Want to know what a great captain he was, just ask vankoover fans.

A poll at hockeysfuture had him 2nd or 3rd behind yzerman and beliveau.

Sick and tired sick and tired sick and tired….....

How in the world can crosby be ahead of sakic. Lets wait till he plays more than 5 seasons in the nhl to call him a great captain.

Crosby and Doan on the list but not Scott Stevens?  Gretzky - 4 Cups?  And I see the leadership myth of Mark Messier continues to be propogated.

I agree with you about Messier (and this coming from a Rangers fan), but get it right. It was game 6.
