The Asking Price For Artemi Panarin

from TSN,

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun said Thursday that the Nashville Predators and Boston Bruins "had a bit of sticker shock" when they heard the Columbus Blue Jackets asking price for Artemi Panarin.

Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic writes that, according to one executive, the Blue Jackets are seeking a first-round pick, a high-end prospect and a young player back for Panarin, who is a pending unrestricted free agent. From a Bruins perspective, Shinzawa thinks that would mean the team parting with either centre Ryan Donato or defenceman Urho Vaakanainen, forward Trent Frederic and the team's first-round pick to pry Panarin out of Columbus.

The BJ’s are confusing the value of the player with a year or two remaining on contract vs the value of a player with an expiring contract leaving on a free in a couple months. They should be looking to get what value they can from an asset heading out the door. There is still time for a deal, so maybe this is a bit of seeing if they can get someone to overpay. If he moves closer to the deadline, we should see something closer to the market value. Otherwise, he’s gone in the summer with nothing coming the other way.

If any team is getting a 1st rounder for a player, I think it’s the BJs with Panarin.  That extra stuff (high end prospect and young player) might be a tad rich, but you know what they say: ask for a lot, get a little.

Elliotte Friedman tweet,

There is word today Artemis Panarin has joined teammate Sergei Bobrovsky’s agent, Paul Theofanous. This is going to lead to plenty of speculation they could be a package deal in free agency. We will see how it plays out.

It doesn’t sound THAT far out of line. There have been equivalent chips trade for elite level commodities at the trade deadline before. If I remember correctly both Hossa from Atlanta to Pittsburgh and Kovalchuk from Atlanta to NJ were for similar assets. You have to keep in mind that teams interested in acquiring Panarin are generally going to be picking low in the first round. They’ll also get first crack at re-signing him.
