Second-year right winger Christian Fischer, however, has been a coaches’ delight for Rick Tocchet.
He mentioned Fischer’s steady play before Friday night’s game against the Washington Capitals and he raved about the 20-year-old’s continuing marked improvement again after Fischer crashed the crease and jammed in a rebound with 61 seconds to play to force overtime at Gila River Arena.
The Coyotes dominated the three-on-three portion of play in the extra session and their puck possession prowess paid off when Max Domi fed a backhander to the net and Clayton Keller scored on a second effort to beat goalie Philipp Grubauer with 27 seconds left for a hard-fought 3-2 victory in front of 10,904.
“We came out strong and we didn’t give them much and we played our style of hockey,” Keller said after scoring his team-leading 13th goal. “I think that’s what happens when we stick with it.”
