The Answer Man

05/16/2015 at 10:01am EDT

Friday morning I decided to get away from the home office and try to have a relaxing day.

I headed to the local coffee shop but soon after I sat down, it started.

Hey Paul, what about Mike Babcock, hey Paul, what about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, hey Paul, what about the Detroit Red Wings?

My relaxing day turned into ask the answer man.

On Mike Babcock, I have no idea what he will do. One day I say he is leaving Detroit, the next day my thoughts are he is staying, then the cycle repeats.

Even if I had an odds calculator, I could not predict what he will do.

Bob McKenzie of TSN said yesterday the other teams interested in Babcock's services are Buffalo and Toronto but I have to believe there may be one or two more teams with interest but are flying under the radar.

The only thing I know about Babcock is it will soon be over.

May 20th may be the date, but then he could just say he is not returning to Detroit but not announce what team he will sign on with. Then the circus continues. Of course he could also say he is re-signing with Detroit and just like that, we get back to normal.

Regarding the playoffs, I like the Anaheim Ducks to win the Stanley Cup. I want a summer of Bruce Boudreau quotes, TV appearances and all that goes along with it.

I believe the Ducks will be meeting the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final and the Lightning will have a tough time with matchups throughout the series.

The only hope fot the Lightning would be the Ducks playing an undisciplined game, which they can do at times but lately that has not been an issue.

The Detroit Red Wings? They are what they are, need a top level defenseman badly and more consistent scoring up front. Trades may happen over the summer but the core of the team has to get better while Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg get older.

I still believe Jeff Blashill will replace Mike Babock behind the bench if Babcock does decide to leave and I think the transition will be minimal. Blashill has coached many of the current Wings and is familiar with their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. But until next week, we wait.

Later today I plan on getting a haircut, perhaps a disguise is in order.
