With Chris Stewart out because of a broken jaw, the theory is the Ducks could use another forward – likely one whose contract is expiring that would be a playoff rental – and one that can produce goals. And there could be those available at the deadline.
Winnipeg’s Andrew Ladd, Boston’s Loui Eriksson and Arizona’s Mikkel Boedker top the list of those that could be on the market. All can be unrestricted free agents and have yet to be re-signed by their current teams.
But there are others who might not cost as much. Montreal’s Dale Weise is a rugged forward who has a career-high 14 goals. Buffalo’s Jamie McGinn also is a net-front player with 14 goals, though the Sabres are believed to be interested in retaining him.
The Ducks had key scouts dispatched over the weekend at the Buffalo-Columbus and Tampa Bay-Pittsburgh games. Tampa Bay winger Alex Killorn is an upcoming restricted free agent and the Lightning need to sign star Steven Stamkos and scoring winger Nikita Kucherov.
Murray typically prefers to make “hockey deals” or those where it is player-for-player.
