The Anaheim Ducks Lose The Game And John Gibson Injured Too

12/28/2018 at 7:42am EST

from Elliott Teaford of the OC Register,

It didn’t seem real, another miraculous diving save with his goalie stick that John Gibson could add to his collection of highlight-reel denials during a season in which he’s been mentioned as a possible Hart Trophy candidate as the NHL’s MVP.

Did his first-period stop on Joe Thornton’s one-timed shot come at too high of a price?

Gibson didn’t return to the ice to start the second period, yielding to backup Chad Johnson for the final 40 minutes because of an unspecified upper-body injury. Gibson’s status for upcoming games wasn’t immediately certain after the Ducks’ 4-2 loss Thursday to the San Jose Sharks.

“We’ll have more of an assessment when we get home, probably in the days to come,” Coach Randy Carlyle said....

Moments before Burns scored, Johnson made a save on Melker Karlsson, with the puck ricocheting into the protective netting to the goalie’s right. The Ducks stopped skating, believing the puck was out of play. Ryan Kesler put his hand in the air to indicate the puck was in the netting.

No whistle was forthcoming, however.

The Sharks regained possession along the left-wing boards and Brenden Dillon passed to the right point to Burns, who beat Johnson with a laser for his fifth goal of the season in his 1,000th game in the NHL. The Ducks protested on the ice and on the bench, but they received no justice....

“We obviously have a different take on what happened than the … four guys wearing stripes,” Carlyle said. “That’s what you chalk it up to (a missed call). You can’t (challenge). You can plainly see there are five players on our hockey club who stopped playing.”
