Tell It Like It Is Boys

from Tom Jones of the Tampa Bay Times,

NBC almost did a great job covering the nasty final few minutes of Sunday’s Flyers-Penguins game. The direction and camera work were first-rate. Viewers didn’t miss a second of the fights on the ice and war of words between the benches.

What was missing was stronger analysis from Pierre McGuire and Ed Olczyk. While both teams seemed to have a reason to be irritated with the other, neither analyst was strong enough in his opinion as to who was to blame. It was obvious Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was upset with Penguins coach Dan Bylsma. But it would have been nice if McGuire and Olczyk — both former coaches who, you would think, know the protocol — gave their takes on who was in the right.

Viewers also could have expected more from McGuire, who was stationed between the benches, smack dab in the middle of the yelling and trash talking. One could only guess there was plenty of cursing and threats, but McGuire at least could have given us more of a clue to the gist of the argument. One of the advantages of being between the benches is hearing what is being said. So take advantage of it.

In the end, McGuire and Olczyk are outstanding. They provided excellent commentary for most of Sunday’s game as they do for every game. I’d rather listen to those two than anyone else when it comes to hockey. But the viewers needed just a little more on Sunday.

McGuire and Olczyk are both blowhards and nobody gives two shots what they think. Hence this article means nothing. It was a great game though.

Yeah, I’d have to agree with Vlad. I thought these two horrible broadcasters called a great game horribly.

That cross-check looked wind-aided to me.

Tom Jones has either never heard good commentary, or he is mentally deficient.

Also, did McGuire mention that Laviolette got so angry he slammed a stick into the glass, with part of it landing in the Penguins bench, apparently almost hitting someone (at least that’s what the Penguins said after the game)?  Or did I just miss McGuire’s commenting on that?  Cause that seems like a pretty big thing to miss, as that was the primary issue Bylsma had.

Maybe Pierre was too busy thinking about what a character guy Brayden Schenn is to notice what was going on around him . . .

No.  McGuire was too busy gargling Rosby’s bag to do that.

I got fooled by this one as well. This is a great joke.

I bet McGuire’s mic was turned off during that whole exchange that’s why he said very little. Otherwise we may have heard just a loud beep the entire time. One nugget Olczyk and McGuire did do was basically call out Sid and say “the cross-check” was part of the game and he needed to get over it.

Cross checks are part of the game, but I would expect the Flyers to do the same if it happened to Giroux.  The entire reason the 4th line was out there was because of Schenn.  It just so happened Vitale, who will have to fight a Flyer on Saturday, lit up Briere in the process.
