On Monday morning, the Edmonton Oilers’ official Twitter account proudly hit a new milestone in fan engagement, topping 300,000 followers for the first time:

But how does that total compare to the rest of the NHL?

Unsurprisingly, it lags behind the NHL most established franchises. The NHL’s top team by Twitter followers is the Montreal Canadiens, with 604,000, more than double Edmonton’s total. Every Original Six team is in that group, along with three teams from the NHL’s first wave of expansion (in 1967) – the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. The youngest team in the mix is Vancouver, which was awarded an expansion franchise in 1970:
