Talking About Death

from of Nicholas J. Cotsonika Yahoo,

You want to change the subject, but you can’t. Not yet.

It’s Thursday afternoon at the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils. The NHL is holding its annual player media tour. There are stars all over the place – Alex Ovechkin in his gear over here, Sidney Crosby in a suit over there – in town for interviews and photo shoots and promo tapings to hype the upcoming season.

And in a sunny atrium stands Pavel Datsyuk, the Detroit Red Wings’ dazzling magician, talking about death.

A plane crashed Wednesday in Datsyuk’s home country. It was carrying the Kontinental Hockey League team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. It was carrying Brad McCrimmon, who had been an assistant coach for the Wings. It was carrying Ruslan Salei, who had been a defenseman for the Wings. It was carrying several others Datsyuk had played with or against in Russia or the NHL.

Pavel Datsyuk is a really intelligent, insightful, emotionally aware individual.
I can understand his and everyone’s devastation.
The young wives and children.....their loss is unreal.

Datsyuk’s perspective is the one that I’ve been waiting for, and it is, indeed, the one person in the hockey community that I think this tragedy impacted like none-other. Perhaps I am wrong, but as I looked at every player on that roster, it seems they have more relation to Pavs than any other. I’ve struggled with this tragedy, but know that Datsyuk must be reeling on the inside. I pray that this does not affect his ability to dazzle and amaze this season.

The image of Pavel and Ovechkin meeting on the ice before the media spectacle in NY that I believe I saw here, is haunting if not full of emotion if you know the man that Datsyuk is.
Pavel is a prayerful man as is obvious whenever he is on the bench, and I hope he uses this tragedy to deepen his resolve to be one of the greatest hockey players in history, one day at a time….one prayer at a time.
I continue to pray for Pavs and all the folks hit by this….I’m still reeling.
