Sweater Talk

from Paul Lukas of ESPN,

Now here's our annual Uni Watch team-by-team breakdown of all the uniform, logo and related changes you can expect to see on the ice:

• No changes this year for the Avalanche, but here's the schedule for when they'll be wearing their third jersey.

• Lots of teams are wearing anniversary patches this season, starting with theBruins, who'll be marking their 90th anniversary with this patch design. Not quite as cool as what they wore for their 50th anniversary, but it'll do.

• Big news out of Montreal, where theCanadiens have started using accents, umlauts and other diacritical marks for the players' names on their jerseys. What took them so long? And how long until other teams get on board with this?

more including some tuck talk...

A couple of things. One, I didn’t know that there was a problem with this. Two, I didn’t know that this wasn’t already being done. Truthfully, its not something I really notice. Three, only in Montreal would this be considered “big news.” The obsession of ethnic background that Montreal has baffles me. The Yankees, Dodgers, Lakers, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and countless other powerful and historic professional sport teams probably could care less where a certain coach or player comes from and what language he or she speaks. Yet in Montreal, it seems to be more important that it really should. Part of me thinks that well, if it isn’t being done league wide, good for Montreal. Yet another part of me thinks that this is another incident in a long list of things that Montreal is obsessed with besides putting the best team, no matter what language they speak, on the ice.

I agree whole-heartedly.

Of course it would be MTL worrying about this.  That was my very first thought.

Seems to me that it is US-based ESPN making a big deal out of it, not Montreal.  If ESPN, out of Bristol, Connecticut, USA didn’t report on this would you even know about how important accents are to the Canadiens organization that it took them over 100 years to institute this?

That is a good question. Maybe ESPN is making a big deal out of nothing. But given the recent press out of Montreal the past few years in respect of the french speaking situation, its not that big of a stretch to assume that this would actually mean something. Would this be news to ESPN if it were to happen in Toronto or Vancouver, NYC or LA? No. Yet it seems to be important to ESPN to mention it for Montreal, Why?
